on defense. he's going to be on the defense on the 47%. he's going to be on defense on his tax question. i mean, this is a guy who doesn't have very much to work with at this point. so it's hard for me to see, even if he doesn't make a major gaffe, which he does on a weekly basis, even if he doesn't, what ammunition does he have to actually have a good showing? >> i'm told there are examples of elections turning on debates, president bush for example started gaining on al gore when they faced off in 2000. is it usually the case that debates are quite the kind of game-changer that everybody thinks this one has to be for romney to do anything successfully in november? >> no, it's not. the historical data shows that i think we sort of exaggerate the role of debates. i would tip my hat to the washington monthly that has a nice article that goes through some of the political science and polling on this. it says they have a marginal impact. one notable exception was the 2000 debates between bush and gore where it appears gore pllo two or three points after those debates. we remember

that the sequester that might result in defense cuts that his running mate paul ryan voted for, he implied that would hurt suicide prevention programs for veterans even though the v.a. would be exempt from that, so i'm not sure he even understood what it was he was talking about. but at least he tried. at least veterans got a mention from him. even if it didn't make sense in policy terms. you do know that defense and veterans are two different -- at some point it should be possible with 40 days left to say veterans have to be more than just an applause line. right? you don't just get to use them for a photo op like the decommissioned battleship you used as a backdrop when you introduced paul ryan inexplicably in front of a battleship, another time when you didn't mention the war. even if you're not willing to talk about the war we are in that you would be taking over, veterans are not a hypothetical construct. the way they're treated is not an esoteric consequence of how we feel about them as a nation or how much military spending we have which is how mitt romney described it today

on here is romney is sort of in permanent reaction mode. he was put on the defensive over the 47% remark, so he's got to go out and illustrate all these new examples of empathy and compassion, even if that contradicts what he said last week. he's gotten in trouble because he didn't mention veterans during his acceptance speech at the convention. okay. well, now they're going to throw on a veterans event and give a speech to the veterans about, you know, isn't it terrible that 23 million people looking for work and, in fact, he's given it to a rather well-heeled crowd in the second wealthiest county in the nation. >> so, dana, does that kind of reactivity give you any confidence that such a mind could be in a position such as commander in chief of the nation. >> well, he laid out a case today about when he is commander in chief, he is going to spend an extra trillion dollars on dfers and yet he's also going to cut taxes and yet also going to reduce the debt. so i believe that if he can do that, then it will be worth us watching. >> you know -- >> go ahead, karen. >> you mention th

he said, both of us care about middle class families, that was almost an entirely defensive ad. and that quinnipiac/"new york times" poll showed why. there was a question in there that asked, does obama, does romney care about the middle class, the rich, the poor, or everyone equally? most polls the that give four choices usually get scattered answers. 58% of the people in ohio said that mitt romney's policies favored the rich. by contrast, 59% said that obama's policies favored either everybody equally or the middle class. that's a 17-point gap. and i think the auto rescue is part of it. those bain ads are part of it. ken blackwell, the former republican secretary of state was on cnn today. and he said it was just like '04. bush roughed up kerry in the summer and kerry never recovered. and he didn't say romney will never recover, but the implication was, romney's in a heap of trouble. >> chris redfern, who is the chairman of the democratic party in ohio also with us tonight. chris. a very untenable position that governor kasich is being placed in, to go out and talk about the econo
